
The Velebit Mountains in Croatia were the main location for the Winnetou and Old Shatterhand films that were produced in the 1960’s.
A German writer Karl Friedrich May wrote one of the most famous adventure novels ever written called Winnetou, according to which was made a movie. Those movies are known as the most popular and the most viewed German movies.

Many locations in Croatia were chosen to be part of Winnetou movies such as National Park Paklenica, National Park Plitvička jezera, National Park Krka, the canyon of River Zrmanja, Nature Park Velebit, Nature Park Vransko jezero, sites Modrić, Rovanjska, Jasenice, Rastevic, Omiš and so on.
7 out of 11 Winnetou movies were filmed in the National Park Paklenica, near Starigrad-Paklenica.
Karl May choose these locations in Croatia beacuse of its natural beauty and because of delightful nature parks.
