The Walls of Ston, originally called Stonske zidine, is a complex made from defensive stone walls that used to be more than 7 kilometers long! That’s about 4.3 miles!
These walls surround the beautiful city of Ston, which is nearby Dubrovnik, and it used to be a key portion of the Republic of Ragusa, peaking in the 15th century.
One of the most famous portions of the wall is the Field Gate of the Walls, originally named Poljska vrata, and they are inscribed with various Latin inscriptions written in the 16th century.
Today, this is one of the best-preserved old fortification systems globally. You might know them as the European Great Wall of China.
The History
The Republic of Ragusa was already protected by some well-built city walls. Still, there had to be another wall of defense built, as the Republic became a really popular place for merchants and travelers.
The walls were later well maintained and renovated, and they protected the valuable salt pans that kept Dubrovnik financially stable.
However, when the Republic fell apart, the demolition work began – the material was used to build schools, and it was „harmful for the health of the residents. “ People essentially began to steal materials, but this was stopped after World War II.
The Geography
Nowadays, this beautiful wall is 5.5 kilometers long – a part of it fell apart and was never replaced. It connects Ston and Mali Ston, and it is covered with about 40 towers and 5 fortresses.
That’s why it’s so interesting! The town’s streets were formed to fit the walls, and the town can be entered from two different gates.
