Second in size among the Elafit Islands, Lopud is located northwest of Dubrovnik, between the islands Koločep and Šipan and throughout history it was often referred to as the middle island (Insula Media).

The surface of the island is 4.63 square km, with a population of around 220. Lopud has 11.5 km of coast and a beautiful 1.2 km long sandy beach. Thanks to the mild climate with around 2600 sunny hours per annum, the island is covered with dense Mediterranean vegetation.

Lopud used to be the island of captains – its inhabitants were the ones who mostly contributed to the maritime affairs of Dubrovnik Republic.
